Gavin and Chauna both graduated from Oregon State University with degrees in Engineering. Gavin’s in Civil Engineering and Chauna’s in Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering. They have both gotten excellent jobs and are working hard in their respective disciplines. Gavin is designing heavy industry structures for a consulting firm in Portland, Oregon and Chauna is working on process development and higher process efficiencies for a large corporation in Wilsonville, Oregon. We are both glad that we made it through the engineering program at OSU, GO BEAVS! Gavin and Chauna are standing with the President of Oregon State University, Dr. Ed Ray.

It was the first day of our freshmen year of college, and I was sitting in my first class of the day, Cyborg Millennium, when a handsome guy comes and sits next to me. As class gets started the professor took roll, and I found out his name was Gavin. After my first day at school, I went home and told my mom that I sat next to cute guy in class. This was going to be a good class! However, like most boys, he didn’t notice I existed until 8 months later when we had to do a group project. The project was okay, but what I got out of it was amazing. We started dating, and by the end of the school year, we were an “official” couple. I still have the first rose he ever gave me and cherish the memories of our first dates.
Three days after our six year anniversary, I will be marrying my best friend.

The fact that Gavin was going to propose was no surprise. We had talked about getting married but were waiting until we were out of school. A few weeks before the proposal we went looking at rings, and found a spectacular one, which he picked out! Since the ring was not a surprise, he wanted the proposal to be one. It was a Thursday, and it just happened to be Valentine’s Day. Gavin was two months into his job as a structural engineer while I was finishing up my last term of school. So we were separated by about an hour, and decided to celebrate Valentine’s Day the following weekend by going to the beach. This worked out well for me because I had a midterm review that night, and a midterm the following morning.
I was sitting in my last class of the day, when I started getting text messages from Gavin, asking me about my plans for the evening and when I was going to be home. I told him that I was going to be home around 6 or 7 depending on how late the class went and then going to bed early, but that I would call him beforehand for our goodnight phone call. He kept text messaging me while I was in class (which should have been a clue because he knew I had class), the last message said, “You better be home soon or your present is going to melt.” I found this odd because if he sent me a packaging of chocolate it wasn’t going to melt because it was freezing outside. I walked home from class, and when I got to the top of the stairs, there was no package. I got out my keys, unlocked the door, bent back down to put my keys away and pick up my bag when a very frightening thing happened.
The door opened from the inside! It was Gavin, giving me a heart attack in the entryway. As I got over my initial shock, I was excited to see him because I thought he wasn’t coming down until the following evening. Upon entering the apartment, I finally got the hint. There were candles and roses everywhere, and set up on our kitchen table was a “shrine” to our relationship together. In the middle of the table was a little velvet box.
Gavin, after a sentimental speech, got down on one knee and asked, “Chauna, will you marry me?”
My response, “OF COURSE!”
And the rest is history; on June 13, 2009 at 6 o’clock in the evening I will be starting the next chapter in my life with the man who stole my heart.
